I read this book when it came out back in August. I didn’t finish it in one sitting, but it still took me two weeks to finish because I got distracted here and there. The Good Liar tells the story of Emily, a high school student who has to live with her aunt—a lying sociopath—because her mom is in jail for murdering her husband in self-defense.

Plot Summary for The Good Liar
Let’s take a short look at the storyline of The Good Liar before we get into the conclusion.
The Past of Hans Taub and Lili Schröeder
Hans Taub was a young German who tutored a family in English; Lili was his pupil. Hans retaliates by kissing one of Lili’s sisters when the sisters taunt him. He then proceeds to sexually abuse Lili upstairs. The girls’ father throws Hans out of the home, unaware of what he has done to Lili.
Hans then accuses Lili’s father of being a Nazi collaborator, and their home is confiscated. Lili’s mother commits herself, abandoning the sisters to their fate. A bomb kills Lili’s sisters one day, and Lili grows up alone and mistreated by war invaders.
Lili eventually settles in England, has a family, and ages, but she never forgets or forgives Hans Taub. Meanwhile, Hans has grown weary of living in Germany and wishes for a new beginning. On one of Hans’ operations, he and a British officer called Roy Courtnay are ambushed by a Nazi they are attempting to apprehend. Roy Courtnay’s face gets shot off, but Hans is not severely injured. Because to their visual resemblance, Hans takes on the name of Roy and relocates to England, while Hans Taub is declared dead.
What is Steven’s name?
Many years later, Lili’s grandson’s boyfriend, who also happens to be a great researcher, discovers that Hans has assumed Roy’s name and is now living in England. They also learn that Hans is a con artist who makes a career by defrauding others and would kill if challenged.

Steven and Lily devise a strategy.
Lily creates the persona of Betty, an elderly naïve wealthy widow, and joins an older dating site. Hans approaches her on the gateway, as anticipated, and tries to gain her confidence. Lily lets Hans believe he’s playing a joke on her. Steven impersonates Lili’s shady grandson. Vincent, Hans’ accomplice in crime, attempts to persuade Lily to combine her money with Hans’ in order to empty her bank account. The first effort fails because Lili requests some time to consider it.
Lili later fakes a stroke, and her buddy arrives dressed as a doctor, telling her she won’t last long if these medical occurrences continue. Lili uses the teeny-tiny empathy factor to persuade Hans to go to Berlin, where he would otherwise be hesitant.
Steven meets them in Berlin to show them around. He brings Lili and Hans to the location where the actual Roy Courtnay was shot down. Steven attempts to corner Hans by telling the tale of how he assumed the identity of another guy. He does this to confuse ‘Roy’ and make him confess that his identity is a ruse. Now I think Hans is not a Nazi, but rather an illegal immigrant who abandoned his position and fabricated his identity. Hans just wanted to leave Germany and begin a new life. However, if authorities find out, Hans’ conman activities will be exposed, and he will be arrested. Lili accepts Hans’ explanation and pretends to be horrified with Steven for being too inquisitive, before requesting to leave Berlin and return home.
Lili pays a covert visit to her old house the day before, sneaking up to her room and pulling out her locket, which has a strand of Hans’ hair that she caught the day he attacked her. This strand of hair has DNA proof that Roy is Hans Taub.
The Joint Accountant’s Office
Hans feels victorious over Steven as a result of this incident. Despite his real identity, he believes Lili has complete faith in him. Lili agrees to deposit her money with Roy in a joint account when she returns to England. Vincent privately recommends to Hans that they leave a little amount of money for Lili, since he thinks she is a sick lady called Betty. Hans, on the other hand, is selfish and disagrees; he wants to take all of her money, leaving nothing for her medical expenses.
Lili is reluctant to transfer all of her money to the joint account, which Vincent establishes. When Hans notices this, he transfers his whole net worth as a sign of confidence. Lili wires everything she has after that. Lili is attempting to persuade Hans to transfer all of his funds in this moment, and the reason she seems to be hesitant is to persuade Hans to go all in.
Betty is abandoned by Roy.
Steven meets with Vincent and threatens him with a large lawsuit, which is revealed later in the film. Vincent feels powerless and gives Lili all of her money back. Hans’ money are now the only ones remaining in the joint account. Meanwhile, Hans packs his belongings and places his safe keypad in his luggage. Hans leaves Lili on the guise of seeing his estranged son. Lili had already snatched the keypad from Han’s backpack. Hans seems to want to stop and remain with Lily for a little time at the train station. He seems to have developed feelings for Betty (Lili). However, this is mainly due to Lili’s excellent performance. She wants to punish him and tells him he has to go.
Hans returns home to find that his key card is missing and that Vincent is unavailable. He returns home, frustrated, to Lily’s house, where she waits for him in an empty house.
Explanation of the Good Liar’s Ending
The Good Liar’s conclusion reveals that Betty is Lili, the girl Hans (Roy) previously raped and then denounced her father, destroying Lili’s life. Lili exacts her vengeance by seizing all of Hans’ assets and leaving him with a $100,000 debt to one of the individuals he deceived previously. The two guys Hans crossed appear and demand money. They beat Hans stupid when he refuses. The physical damage is so severe that Hans has a stroke, leaving him crippled and confined to a hospital for the rest of his life.
Ending of The Good Liar: Book Details
According to the Good Liar book, Roy (Hans) was a Nazi who disguised his identity in order to flee. In the novel, Vincent’s character is revealed to be a Jew. When Lili and Steven provide Vincent with proof that Roy is really Hans Taub, a Nazi, Vincent becomes enraged and switches sides, assisting in the downfall of Roy.
But there is one thing that bothers me. Lili informs Hans that she went to her Berlin home and grabbed her locket with his hair. I’m not sure how beneficial that would be. The only thing the authorities can do is match the hair to a man called Roy (or to nobody). I’m not sure whether there was a DNA record for Hans Taub. There’s nothing the hair can do to deny Roy’s existence. If it’s only to make sure Roy is Hans, they’ve gotten him to admit it. I’m not sure why Lili mentions being imprisoned in the last scene. Thoughts?
