When it comes to horror films, I like “the classics”. I do not like getting lost in a maze of convoluted plots and characters that just don’t seem to matter. “The Curse of the Shadow” does not disappoint in this regard.
I enjoyed the original “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” series, back when kids were allowed to watch TV late at night. I remember my mom taking me to see it when I was younger, and I remember the show being pretty scary. However, I was not prepared for “Curse of the Shadows.”

Verdict
Summary
Curse of the Shadows, the second season of the rebooted Are You Afraid of the Dark, is a fairly light spooky supernatural thriller that stretches itself thin over the course of six episodes, but if you’re into urban legend-styled horror with kid protagonists, it should suffice, at least until the next season of Stranger Things arrives.
Plot:
An wicked Shadowman apparition curses a group of youngsters in a secret “midnight” society, and they must figure out how to escape the spell.
Review:
The Midnight Society is still alive! A group of bright and likeable high school students has taken over the mantle of the former Midnight Society members, and they are continuing the practice of sharing frightening tales in the woods. After disturbing the home place of an evil apparition known as the Shadowman, one of the members, a young boy called Connor (Parker Queenan), vanishes in the woods one night. The rest of the group, led by Luke (Bryce Gheisar), tries to figure out what happened to Connor before he becomes a missing person, and they soon learn that the Shadowman is linked to an old curse in town dating back about 30 years, involving the lighthouse keeper and his daughter, who was killed in a car accident. The child attended to the same high school as the present Midnight Society students, and her death not only shocked the community, but also led her heartbroken father to attempt to bring her back using a spell from an old and wicked book, but instead conjured forth the feared Shadowman. Now that the Midnight Society has been alerted to the situation, they seek the assistance of a local magician called Sardo (Ryan Beil) to help them locate the ancient spell book and reverse the curse. However, their job will be very tough as the Shadowman pursues them and learns how to operate inside the light, which is the Shadowman’s sole vulnerability…

The episodes careen in and out of danger with repetitive sequences of the Shadowman pursuing the kids and then being bested by them again and over, it seems like they could have cut two episodes off and had the same outcomes, but faster. Even for a jaded horror lover like me, I have a soft place for true Goonie adventures, so it’s worth a watch. Let’s hope for a third season. Jeff Wadlow directed four of the six episodes (Cry Wolf, Kick Ass 2).
